The Respiralia Foundation celebrates 20 years working to improve the quality of life of people with cystic fibrosis. It’s our anniversary!

Two major projects to kick off this journey
The Balearic Cystic Fibrosis Association was based in a small premises where the air circulation conditions were not suitable for respiratory physiotherapy treatment.
In 2005, the Palma City Council, led by Catalina Cirer, was approached with the possibility of building a center on a plot of land donated by the municipal authority. Once the donation was approved, the Respiralia Foundation was created to lead this project, and its constitution was signed on February 6, 2006.
The construction of the Respiralia building
It began in December 2006 and lasted until 2008, when it was inaugurated.

“The Salty Kiss” documentary film
In 2006, we embarked on the production of the world’s first feature-length documentary on cystic fibrosis: “El Beso Salado” (The Salty Kiss). Directed by Borja Calvo and produced by the Respiralia Foundation, this documentary discusses cystic fibrosis with the life of Frederic Chopin as its central theme. The journalist and writer Fernando Swchartz (general narrator), the actress Silke (narrator of Chopin’s life), and the actor Jorge Sanz (Chopin) participated in the film.

Filmed between 2006 and 2007 in various locations in Spain and Europe, it premiered in 2007 in Palma, followed by other cities such as Valencia, Madrid, Barcelona, Mahón, Formentera, Castellón, and New York.
It should be noted that, thanks to scientific advances, some of the information presented in the documentary, although valid at the time, is now outdated.
Creation of services
One of the main characteristics of the Respiralia Foundation is innovation and the pursuit of excellence in the services it offers. This led to the creation of the “individualized physical training” program, now known as “Endurance training” program.

This program began with a change in the name given to the users of this service. They were no longer people with cystic fibrosis, but athletes with cystic fibrosis, each with the appropriate intensity for their state of health.
In 2025, renovations were undertaken to adapt our gym for strength-endurance and maximum strength exercises, thanks to an agreement with Físic Espai de Salut Integral.

Sports and social events that stand the test of time
Although the Swimming Tour Around Formentera against Cystic Fibrosis began in 2000, thanks to the creation of the Respiralia Foundation in 2006, it has evolved into an event with 26 editions and impressive popular acceptance.
With 16 editions, our popular charity race Solidarity Kilometers against Cystic Fibrosis has become a fixture on the charity race calendar, with an average annual growth of 15% in the number of participants.
Finally, the Fiesta de la Rosa del Mar, an event created to recognize the work of individuals and companies that collaborate in the fight against cystic fibrosis, has established itself as an attractive social event for society.

Teresa Llull, driving force behind the fight against cystic fibrosis
This story of growth and positioning of the Respiralia Foundation would not have been possible without our President, Teresa Llull.
His effort and dedication to the fight against cystic fibrosis, both at the regional and national levels, has led to many achievements for the community. We would like to express our sincere recognition and gratitude.
