With the pandemic caused by Covid-19, society has become aware of routines that people who have Cystic Fibrosis had assumed a long time ago. We talk about maintaining the safety distance and the use of hydroalcholic gel and masks… but
Do we really know what kind of masks we should wear? Here we give you some tips.
Healthy person: Preferably, a hygienic mask.

Symptomatic or asymptomatic positive person: Priority, surgical mask.

Person who cares for or is in contact with a person who is positive for Covid-19: Priority, a mask type EPI (FFP2 or similar without filter).

Remember that children from 3 years of age must use hygienic masks of their size, unless they are positive for Covid-19 (with and without symptoms) that they must use surgical or hygienic masks with UNE specification.
What should we look at when buying a mask?
- Lifespan
- Hygienic: No more than 4 hours and no more washes than those recommended by the manufacturer
- Surgical: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, but no more than 4 hours is recommended. If it is wet or dirty, it must be changed.
- PPE: Follow-up use is recommended for no more than 4 hours. In case of using it in sections less than 4 hours, it should not be used more than 8 hours in total and always keeping them in a paper envelope (not plastic).
- Class
- Hygienic: It is not a medical device. There are those that meet the UNE 0064 and UNE 0065 standards, those that meet other less demanding specifications than the European standard, but which have been tested and show the results, and those that have not passed any test.
- Surgical: It is a medical device. They are type I or II, depending on their bacterial filtration efficiency (EFB). They must have the following symbols marked: CE, UNE EN 14683 and Type I or Type II.
- PPE: It is not a medical device, since it complies with other types of regulations and does not have to be validated by the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS). They can be FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3, depending on the degree of protection, and P1, P2 and P3, depending on the type of filter it carries. For protection against Covid-19 it should not have a filter and, at a minimum, FFP2. In addition, it must show the following marked symbols: CE, UNE EN 149 and NR (Not Reusable) or R (Reusable). From September 30, 2020, masks that do not meet this label, such as KN-95 imported from China, can be sold until December 31, provided they had arrived in Spain before October 1.
Remember that the key is to wear the appropriate mask, wash your hands frequently, maintain a distance of 2 meters to protect you and the people around you and comply with the regulations indicated by the health authorities at all times.
