For the Respiralia Group, phage therapy against multidrug-resistant bacteria in Cystic Fibrosis is a priority because of the potential of this treatment. Dr. Pilar Domingo-Calap, researcher at the Laboratory of Environmental and Biomedical Virology of the Institute of Integrative Systems Biology of the University of Valencia-CSIC and medical director of the company Evolving Therapeutics, spoke about it in the webinar organized by the Spanish Federation of Cystic Fibrosis.
From basic research to patient treatment
Thanks to an important donation, the Respiralia Foundation was able to contribute to the creation of the company Evolving Therapeutics. This spin-off company, created together with the University of Valencia and the researchers Pilar and Marisa Domingo Calap, aims to transfer the results of basic research in phage therapy carried out in the laboratory to society with effective treatments.
Do you know what the “One Health Solution” is?
It is said that “we are what we eat”. This means that our body is nourished by the food we eat, that is to say, by the animals and vegetables that are in our environment.
These animals and plants are not exempt from having bacteria that can be harmful to our body. Let us remember that we have many bacteria inside us that are not only not harmful to us, but are necessary for proper functioning.
However, others can be very harmful because they hinder the function of our organs. For this reason, the One Health Solution acts in the field of plant, animal and human health.
Did you know that viruses are not always bad?
We normally associate the word virus with something bad. However, there are viruses in the environment that only feed on bacteria that are harmful to us, so if we manage to detect the right virus to kill a particular multidrug-resistant bacteria and turn it into a treatment, the virus will act in our body eliminating that bacteria and protect us from future infections. This is called “phage therapy”.
Did you know this about viruses?
- In one drop of water there are more viruses than people in Portugal
- In our body there are 10 times more viruses than bacteria… and they coexist with us…
- There are more viruses on planet Earth than grains of sand, counting beaches and the seabed.
