The Respiralia Group, with the sponsorship of Grupo Piñero and the collaboration of the Asociación de Voluntariado de CaixaBank in the Balearic Islands and the Asociación Tramuntana XXI, has planted 1270 trees (oak, myrtle and bush) in the Finca Son Torrella.

Creation of a forest at Finca Son Torrella
This project aims to create a forest. Previously, years ago, the Zayas family, owner of the plot, had planted pine trees in an area without trees, probably bald due to the intervention of herbivores that eat any sprout that comes out.

The installation of a fence to protect this part of the farm has proved to be key to this project, as it is the first measure to prevent these large herbivorous animals (sheep and goats) from accessing this area. With the pine trees planted and this protection, it has been possible to continue with the objective of creating a forest.
Protecting new plants
One of the keys is to prevent smaller herbivorous animals (rabbits, rats, etc.) from gaining access to the tender stems of the trees and shrubs that have just been planted.

For this reason, the training received by Joan Juan, technician of the Tramuntanta XXI Association and person in charge of the Zayas Family project, has been fundamental for this plantation to have as few debris as possible, either due to the action of herbivorous animals or due to the action of wind, rain and snow.
Natural selection
Nature will make the selection of the plants that will finally last in time. Our work has been done with the utmost care, so much so that after the December DANA, 99% of the plants planted are intact.
Carbon footprint measurement
Thanks to the collaboration of the company True World Organization, we have measured the carbon footprint generated by the people and machinery involved in the activity. You can read the report here.
A project for the future
Son Torrella is a private estate with the vocation of a public estate, since the property has opened it so that anyone can enjoy long walks along its paths.
The Respiralia Group will continue to look for environmentally conscious companies that want to participate in a project that can be as big as the resources we have to do it.
If you know of a company that would like to start a new plantation, either as a main sponsor or in collaboration with others, you can send an email to fundacio@respiralia.org.
