In this new informative capsule we talk with nutritionist Lucia Redondo about healthy eating in Cystic Fibrosis, a topic of interest to the whole group.
The importance of nutrition
Thanks to many scientific studies, we know that nutrition has an impact on the functioning of the rest of the organs of all people. When, in addition, a person has a disease, it is especially important to take the right foods for their nutritional needs.
Healthy eating for a high-calorie diet
In the past, parents used to prepare high-calorie dishes without considering whether this extra calorie intake was healthy or not. They probably did so because, given the short life expectancy of a few years ago, it was more important to gain weight than the possible future consequences on other organs.
Thanks to scientific advances, life expectancy is no longer a very relevant factor in the most developed countries, so we must think about preparing healthy dishes so as not to negatively affect other important functions.
What we DON’T eat is more important than what we DO eat.
Nature provides us with an infinity of healthy foods that contrast with many of those we can find on the shelves of supermarkets or in our own home. These are the ultra-processed products that, in most cases, are not healthy.
For this reason, it is more important to gradually start leaving aside these ultra-processed products to gradually prepare our dishes with these natural foods, cooked, if necessary, by steaming, baking or grilling.
Healthy and satiating foods versus empty calories
It is possible to eat a lot, that is to say, to ingest many calories, but in a healthy way. On the contrary, eating many foods whose content does not provide caloric value (added sugars, breading, fried foods, sugary drinks, etc.) only provides short-lived energy that will not allow us to make physical efforts for a long time.
The healthy dish in Cystic Fibrosis
We already know that the diet of a person with Cystic Fibrosis should be hypercaloric, but what should that dish be like?
At the manual of healthy diet for people with Cystic Fibrosis, published by the Respiralia Group in 2019, you can see the ideal dish for these people,
