The Respiralia Foundation offers talks on Cystic Fibrosis in educational centers since 3 years ago. The Covid-19 opened a hiatus in our activities in person, but, thanks to the Colegio Santa Mónica of Palma, we have resumed these interesting talks.
Respiratory System and Cystic Fibrosis
The 6th grade students of this educational center received training in Cystic Fibrosis taking advantage of the study of the respiratory system at this time of the year.

The activity consists of an overview of the respiratory system, through a vídeo, the resolution of some questions about this system and healthy habits and exposure of causes that can cause respiratory diseases.
After a touch on genetics, Dani’s video explains what Cystic Fibrosis is.
Practical activity
After emphasizing how to live with people who have a disease or some kind of limitation in order to fight against discrimination based on illness in the classroom, we moved on to the practical part.
This part, which is more fun for the students, is done outdoors and with a safety distance in Covid times. They are taught the reaction of the body to an explosive exercise, measuring the number of breaths, the pulse and the diameter of a balloon inflated by them in a single breath.
The first measurement is taken at rest and the second after performing 10 squats with jumping jacks between each measurement. After noting the results, an overall assessment is made to make them aware of whether they should do more physical exercise in their daily routine, in addition to giving them tips for a healthy diet with low intake of trans fats.
Do you want us to do this activity in your school or high school?
The Respiralia Foundation is open to go to any educational center to carry out these activities:
- Storytelling “Respiralio y el Gran Oso Azul“, for students between 6 and 9 years old.
- Respiratory system and Cystic Fibrosis, for students between 10 and 14 years old.
- PrevAction: Activate yourself in healthy habits, for students between 15 and 17 years old.
If you are interested, send us an email and we will talk about it.

About Cystic Fibrosis
Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic, serious and degenerative disease that to date has no cure.
It mainly affects the respiratory, digestive, reproductive and sweat glands.
You can see the infographic published by the Spanish Federation of Cystic Fibrosis in this link (Spanish version).
Currently, more than 2,000 mutations are known to cause the disease.
Statistics show that 1 in 5,000 people in Spain has Cystic Fibrosis (1 in 6,400 in the Balearic Islands) and 1 in 35 people is a carrier of a gene that causes the disease.
In the Balearic Islands there are 73 known diagnosed cases, but statistics speak of between 85 and 90 possible cases.
The awareness project of the Respiralia Foundation aims to raise awareness of this disease in order to discover those cases of people who have Cystic Fibrosis but have not yet been diagnosed.
