The Union of Solid Organ Transplant Recipients celebrates National Organ Donor Day under the slogan “We all have a donor gene – activate it!”

National Organ and Tissue Donor Day
As every year, the first Wednesday of June is celebrated in Spain as National Organ and Tissue Donor Day, organized by the Union of Solid Organ Transplant Recipients, with the collaboration of the National Transplant Organization (ONT), and this year the slogan is “We all have a donor gene, activate it!
What is the Union of Solid Organ Transplant Recipients?
The Union of Solid Organ Transplant Patients (UTxs) is the result of the cooperation of four patient organizations: the National Federation for the Fight against Kidney Diseases (ALCER), the Cystic Fibrosis Spanish Federation (FEFQ), the Spanish Federation of Heart Transplant Patients (FETCO) and the National Federation of Liver Patients and Transplant Patients (FNETH).
Tribute to donors and family members
The objective of this day is to honor donors and their families throughout the country for their enormous generosity, as well as to raise awareness in society about the vital importance of organ donation for people waiting for a transplant.
Statistics
In 2021, despite the difficulties generated by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to ONT data, 4,781 organ transplants were performed in Spain, thanks to the 1,905 people who donated their organs after death and the 324 people who donated a kidney or part of their liver during their lifetime.
Specifically, 2,950 kidney, 1,078 liver, 362 lung, 302 heart, 82 pancreas and 7 intestinal transplants were performed.
Road to recovery
Although the rates have not yet reached the record levels recorded in Spain in 2019, it was possible to see a recovery of 8% in transplantation and 7% in organ donation compared to 2020.
Spain, an example in organ donation
Spain is a reference model for many countries, as it continues to be a world leader in this field, thanks to the National Donation and Transplantation Program of the ONT together with the Autonomous Communities, which is characterized by the talent and commitment of health professionals, scientific progress, solidarity and humanity of donors and their families.
Organ transplant waiting list
Despite the growth in donation and transplantation last year, there are still a significant number of patients on the waiting list, awaiting an organ. As of December 31, 2021, according to ONT data, the waiting list stood at 4,762 patients, a figure similar to that recorded in 2020 with 4,794 patients.
The importance of organ donation
Therefore, it is essential to remember the importance of organ donation so that many people can continue to live, as well as to thank donors and their families, since, thanks to them, a process that changes the lives of thousands of people every year in our country begins, and that would not be possible without the work of health professionals and the role played by the National Transplant Organization (Organización Nacional de Trasplantes).

The Respiralia Group encourages all the families and groups that support us to give the gift of life to others in need through organ donation.
